Braunwald - Kleiner Gumen chairlift

The Braunwald - Kleiner Gumen chairlift was the last chairlift in Switzerland to operate on the roll-off principle . Operations ceased on April 3, 2005. In December 2007, a new combined lift went into operation as a replacement. The train runs from the village of Braunwald in the canton of Glarus to the Gumen .

history

The railway was put into operation on January 1, 1948, and gangloff cabins were also in use at times . These were closed and offered protection from bad weather. However, the gangloff cabins had to be taken out of service again for weight reasons.

After the concession of the railway expired on April 3, 2005, a special permit was requested to continue operating the railway. However, this was not approved as no new proof of safety was provided. In 2007 the old Braunwald-Kleiner Gumen chairlift was dismantled and a new combination lift with 2-seater chairs and 4-seater gondolas was built. In December 2007 the new lift went into operation. The 2-seater chairlifts, like the old armchairs, were placed sideways.

The old track had 23 supports, the length of the track was 2084 meters. The valley station was at 1314  m above sea level. M. , the mountain station at 1904  m above sea level. M. The difference in height of the railway was thus 590 meters. 86 2-seater chairlifts were in use.

The new combined lift has 19 supports, the length of the track is 2031 meters. The valley station and the mountain station are at the same height as their predecessors. The difference in altitude is again 590 meters. There are 21 4-seater gondolas and 63 2-seater armchairs in use.
