Sevillana
The Sevillana is a folk dance from Seville , widespread in southern Spain , which is counted as part of Flamenco . In Andalusia it is considered the ultimate folk dance, which every Andalusian tries to master from childhood and performs with great zeal and seriousness at popular festivals.
Typically the Sevillana is danced in pairs, with two women, but traditionally never two men dancing together. It is also suitable for stage choreography .
A series of four Sevillanas ( coplas ) is always danced, the rhythmic structure of which is always the same, but each different in the melody and the text of the song. The dance steps of the four coplas are different, although some elements, such as the basic Sevillana step and the so-called pasada , are often repeated.
The Sevillana begins with an instrumental introduction that sets the rhythm. It is interrupted by a sung transition, the salida . Then the actual dance begins, which consists of three stanzas. Each stanza for its part has an instrumental part of three bars ( estribillo ) and nine bars sung, so that the dance including the final bar lasts exactly 37 bars. The end of the fourth Sevillana in the series usually takes place without replay on the last note of the chant.
The basic rhythm ( compás ) is in 6/8 time, which can also be interpreted as 3/4 time, and is strongly emphasized on the first beat. However, the harmony initially changes in the second bar on the third beat, so that sometimes the impression of a shifted accent arises:

This impression is usually reinforced by the counter-clocked melodies.
The key is actually the modo mayor , i.e. major , although many Sevillanas can be heard in the modo menor . Sometimes the keys are alternated in a series.
