The name comes from Persian ( Persian شبنم Shabnam ) and is a combination of the independently occurring words shab 'evening' , 'night' and nam 'wetness' , 'moisture'. The Persian meaning for this name is 'morning dew'. The composition of the two words has different meanings - such as dew on flowers, fine muslin or earrings. There is an affinity for the Arabic name Selim .
