action
The player controls the main character Aarbron, who experiences the transformation from beast to human.
Game principle and technology
Shadow of the Beast is a hybrid of an action game and platformer . The game is shown two-dimensionally from the side (side scroller ). The player controls Aarbron with a joystick or gamepad through the horizontally and occasionally vertically scrolling game landscape; Elements of the game graphics located in the background are moved more slowly by parallax scrolling and thus create an impression of spatial depth, although it is actually only two-dimensional graphics that are superimposed. Aarbron can avoid opponents by running and jumping or fight them with punching.
Production notes
The atmospheric music was composed by David Whittaker , he used samples from real instruments. Two successors, Shadow of the Beast II and Shadow of the Beast III , were released in 1990 and 1992. In 2016, a remake of the game for the PlayStation 4 , developed by the British studio Heavy Spectrum Entertainment Labs and created with the help of Unreal Engine 4 , was released published by Sony Interactive Entertainment . As a gimmick , the remake contains the original Amiga version as an unlockable extra.
