Sharon Zukin
Sharon Zukin (* in Philadelphia , Pennsylvania) is an American sociologist and university professor.
In 1972 she received her PhD from Columbia University . From 1996 to 2008 she was Professor of Sociology at Brooklyn College . She taught at the Graduate Center of the City University of New York , which specializes in modern city life. Since 2010 she has been visiting professor at the University of Amsterdam .
She writes on culture and real estate in New York City and has also worked on consumer society and culture, the new economic order in the United States and France, and socialism in the former Yugoslavia. Her books Loft Living , The Cultures of Cities and Naked City describe the recent transformation of the city through deindustrialization , gentrification and migration movements , as well as the emergence of the symbolic economy based on cultural production and consumption.
Zukin received the C. Wright Mills Prize from the Society for the Study of Social Problems for Landscapes of Power and the Robert and Helen Lynd Prize for her life's work in urban sociology the American Sociological Association .
