Sharpe ram, young male

The Sharpe ram ( Raphicerus sharpei ) is a dwarf antelope and corresponds in its appearance to the Cape ram , but the ranges of the two species do not overlap. The distribution area is southeast Africa, with the nature reserves Kruger Park , Hwange , Mana Pools , Kafue and Südluangwa .

The small antelope with a body weight of 7.5 kg and shoulder height of 50 cm is predominantly nocturnal. It prefers low shrubbery, often on overgrown, stony hills that border on open grassy areas. It also occurs in dry gallery forests with sufficient, protective shrubbery.

The Sharpe ram is a leaf eater, but grass is not spurned either.

It is classified as not endangered because the population size is estimated at over 95,000 animals, of which more than a third live in protected areas.
