features

The Shaw-Mayer mouse differs from all other mice and rodents in that it only has a single molar per half of the jaw . With a total of only eight teeth, it has the fewest teeth of all rodents.

These mice reach a head body length of 8.5 to 10 centimeters, plus a 10 to 11 centimeter long tail. Their weight is around 17 to 21 grams. Their fur is dark gray on the top and light gray on the underside, some animals have a white patch on their chest. They have tiny webbed feet between their toes.

Way of life

These mice inhabit the highlands of northeast New Guinea between 1400 and 2800 meters above sea level. Forests are their habitat.

Little is known about their way of life. They are likely to be nocturnal, several animals were found under tree trunks, where they were probably looking for food. They are likely to feed primarily on insects.

Due to the large distribution area, the species is not endangered according to the IUCN .
