Sheela-na-Gig by Taghmon
The Sheela-na-Gig of Taghmon ( Irish Teach Munna ) is not in its original location above a window in the north wall of St Munna's Church in Taghmon near Mullingar in County Westmeath in Ireland . The 15th century church is named after Saint Munna, who is said to have founded a monastery here in the 6th century.
The Sheela-na-Gig described by Barbara Freitag as “sitting on the record” has a large head without ears; a pained expression on his face, with his mouth wide open, two rows of bared teeth, two notches in the area of the eyebrows and clearly marked nostrils. Her large hands clasp her bent knees. The lower part of the carving is missing. It showed the lower legs held apart and a large oval vulva .
