The Shite Thaung Temple ( Burmese ရှစ်သောင်း ဘုရား ; pronounced: ʃaɪʔθáʊɴ pʰəɹá) is a Buddhist temple in Mrauk U , Myanmar . It was built 1535–1536 under King Min Bar . Its name means: "Temple of 80,000 Images".

description

The temple stands in the vicinity of the Andaw and Ratanabon pagodas on a rectangular platform, which is occupied on three sides with small stupas. A covered stairway leads from the south up to the platform. A large, bell-shaped stupa sits enthroned in the middle of the square temple building , four smaller similar structures sit on the corners, with 24 smaller stupas in between. A hall is built in front of the temple in the east, from which one can directly access the cella.
Three interconnected corridors surround the cella and contain countless sculptures and reliefs. Noteworthy are the 28 outwardly open niches in the outer wall, in which the 28 last Buddhassit back to back twice; one looks outside, the other in the outer of the three galleries, the inner walls of which are covered with six rows of reliefs running one above the other. The rows of reliefs are interrupted at the corners by life-size sculptures of the builder in his role as the earthly representative of the sky god Indra.
