Shuowen Jiezi
The Shuowen Jiezi ( Chinese 說文解字 / 说文解字 , Pinyin Shuōwén Jiězì - "Explanation of simple and analysis of composite characters") is the first dictionary of characters in Chinese writing , more precisely the small seal script .
It was compiled by the scholar Xu Shen ( 許慎 / 许慎 , Xǔ Shèn ) during the Han Dynasty , around the year 100 AD , and published in 121.
construction
The Shuowen Jiezi lists and explains 9,353 characters in 15 chapters , which are arranged according to radicals . In principle, this system is still in use today. The Shuowen Jiezi knows 540 radicals, the arrangement of which was influenced by philosophical considerations.
This number of 540 radicals was not reduced to 214 radicals in the Kangxi dictionary until 1716, during the Qing Dynasty .
