The Buddha was founded in 994 by the Mon -König Migadepa II. Erected. The figure was later left to decay and then restored several times. With the sinking of Bago in 1757, the Buddha also went missing and was overgrown by jungle. It was not until 1880, at the time of British colonial rule, that it was discovered by chance during earthworks. The restoration began in 1881 and was completed in 1903. In the 1930s, a mosaic was attached to the Buddha's large pillow and marble was laid on the floor.
