Tavoy was the capital of its own small empire in the 15th century and later again, but was repeatedly fought over by Burma and Siam (now Thailand ). In 1751 Siam had a smaller port built here. In 1824 Tavoy came under British control. In 1989 the English name Tavoy was renamed Dawei.

Planned large port in special economic zone

There are plans to build a large port facility for large ocean-going vessels with an attached industrial zone. The decisive factor for this is the proximity to the Thai metropolitan region of Bangkok with its over 14 million inhabitants , which is only 300 kilometers away . So far, the closest port for large container ships is in Singapore , which is much further away , otherwise there are only alternatives on the China Sea. Since there is hardly any infrastructure in this direction so far, enormous expenditures are also required for this. Rail, highway and pipeline connections to China are planned. Italian-Thai Development Plc , commissioned by the Myanmar Port Authority in November 2010 to build the port, was replaced by Dawei SEZ Development (DSEZ) in 2013 due to financial problems and scheduling difficulties. This is a 50:50 joint venture between Myanmar and Thailand. The company registered in Thailand received a concession for 75 years to expand the port and the planned 250 km² special economic zone. When the port is fully expanded, a handling capacity of around 200 million  tons and EUR 3.2 billion annually is planned. To this end, 55  berths are to be created for merchant shipping.
