Backup diver
Backup divers , also called reserve divers or, more rarely, safety divers, are divers who are additionally deployed or kept ready to protect a diver .
These can be used for ice or saturation diving with a second, longer safety line. During the dive you are ready with almost completely dressed diving equipment near the dive site and only have to put on a mask and fins in an emergency. They are directed by a signalman or leash guide. Scuba divers are also used as a backup for apnea diving.
For diving in aid organizations, the GUV prescribes the provision of a fully equipped and operational safety diver. In ice diving, the backup diver must be able to bring an injured diver to the surface of the water within 4 to 5 minutes. In recreational diving without increased risk, the buddy system complies with the requirement that a backup diver is available at all times for an emergency.
