Sideros ( Gr. Σίδερος ), also known as Strongylo ( Στρογγύλο ), is an uninhabited rock island 345 meters off the northeast tip of Crete . It belongs to the municipality of Sitia and thus to the Lasithi prefecture . The island is located immediately north of the Kyriamadi peninsula . The cape that forms the north-east point is also called Cape Sideros ( Ακρωτήριο Σίδερος ).
In ancient times the name of the cape was Samonion ( Σαμώνιον , Latin Sam (m) onium ) or Salmonion ( Σαλμώνιον ). Under the name Salmone ( Σαλμώνη ) it is mentioned in connection with Paul's sea voyage to Rome in Acts 27:
