Essex in the early Anglo-Saxon period

Sigeberht I (also Sigberctus Parvus, Sigeberht the Little or Sigebryht ; † around 650) was king of the Anglo-Saxon Kingdom of Essex from around 617 to around 650 .

Life

Sigeberht, son of King Saeward , succeeded King Saeward on the throne in 617 after he and his brothers were killed in a battle against the West Saxons. Despite his long reign, he left virtually no trace in history. After his death around 650 Sigeberht II took over the throne.

According to William of Malmesbury , a historian of the 12th century, the later King Sighere (around 664 - around 690) was a son of Sigeberht I of Essex.
