Sigeberht II of Essex
Sigeberht II. (Also Sigberct, Sigeberht Sanctus, Sigeberht the good or Sigeberht the saint ; † around 660) was king of the Anglo-Saxon kingdom of Essex from about 650 until his death .
Life
Sigeberht's father was called Sigebald. He was a relative of his predecessor Sigeberht I.
Sigeberht II. Was converted to Christianity around 653 by Oswiu , the friendly king of Northumbria, and baptized with his companions by Bishop Finan of Lindisfarne in Ad Murum (east of Hexham ). In the same year (653), Cedd and another priest were sent from Oswiu to Essex at the request of Sigeberht, where he successfully proselytized. His successes were so great that he was ordained Bishop of the East Saxons by Finan on the occasion of a visit to Lindisfarne. After his return to Essex, he ordained other priests and deacons to support him and continued his work in the monastic mission centers he founded in Ythancaestir (Bradwell-on-Sea) and Tilaburg ( Tilbury ).
In 654 Penda of Mercia attacked Essex and brought it under his rule. After Penda fell in 655, Oswiu of Northumbria took over its role as the hegemonic power. Around 660 Sigeberht was murdered by relatives who accused him of being too Christian. Swithhelm became his successor. The later King Saelred (before 738-746) was a son of Sigeberhts.
