Essex in the early Anglo-Saxon period

Saelred (also: Selered, Selred ) († 746 ) was king of the Anglo-Saxon Kingdom of Essex from 738 to 746 .

Life

According to William of Malmesbury , a 12th century historian, Saelred was a son of King Sigeberht II of Essex . As the successor of the abdicated Offa , he is said to have ascended the throne in 709. However, the chronology around his inauguration is unclear. Modern historians, however, consider Swæfberht (709-738) to be Offa's successor, who was finally followed by Saelred around 738. A common rule of Swæfberht (709–738) and Saelred (? –746) is also represented. Saelred was slain in 746. He was succeeded by Swithred .
