At Deutsche Bahn AG , the concept of a signal is only an abbreviation to which a verbal description of the signal, the meaning of the signal , is assigned. For example, the signal aspect Hp0 stands for “stop”, Hp1 for “drive”, Hp2 for “slow drive” and many others. "Hp" and "Vr" are derived from "Haupt (signal)" and "Vor (signal)".

With modern train control systems such as line train control or ETCS , the signal aspect is transmitted directly to the driver's cab of the respective locomotive .
