Signaling gateway

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A signaling gateway is used at the interface between the voice ( TDM ) and data network ( IP ). It is used to process the signaling data , which are usually stored in the SS7 signaling system , at the gateway so that they can be sent via the respective network (voice or data network). This is necessary because signaling data in the TDM world is sent on circuit-switching PCM channels with a fixed data transmission rate of 64 kbit / s and not in the data network. In the data network, packet switching is carried out using the Internet protocol.

The Stream Control Transmission Protocol (SCTP) can be used to transmit SS7 over IP .

The Signaling Gateway can either be used on its own to send a high volume of SS7 messages instead of using TDM technology (e.g. EWSD ) using IP technology (e.g. router ), or in conjunction with a Media Gateway Controller in various approaches to IP telephony .
