Silver ring from Trichtingen

The Trichtingen silver ring was found in Espenlaub near Trichtingen ( Rottweil district ) in 1928 . It is classified in the La Tène period . It is a torc , but its outer shape is more like an arm ring because it is oval. Its outer diameter is 29.4 cm, its inner 21.6 cm. The ring has an opening which is 1.2 cm at the narrowest point. At each end of the ring there is a bull's head as an ornament. The neck ring has a weight of approx. 7 kg. The outside area consists of 949 ‰ silver and 38 ‰ gold; it is believed that the remaining material of the alloy is copper. The ring contains an iron core. Today the ring is in the Württemberg State Museum .

Finding circumstances

The silver ring was found during drainage work. The ring was inclined in the ground at a depth of 60 cm. The immediate examination of the area did not reveal any further finds, so that the Trichtingen silver ring has remained an individual find. In the area around the site, a Roman road is also known, which established a connection between the castles Sulz and Rottweil .

Special features

The decoration of the ring is not exactly symmetrical. Its pattern creates a play between light and shadow. The various even ornaments, which are drawn in stripes across the ring, resemble a braided pattern, but are also reminiscent of a snake that has laid itself in a semicircle. The two bull heads at the ends of the ring also have individual features. Both depictions are young animals, but they are of different sizes.

interpretation

The silver ring from Trichtingen is interpreted as an offering . However, there are no indications of a sanctuary in the area. It was also not examined whether the ring was just hidden. The fact that it was found at an angle in the earth could also indicate that it was lost.
