The Osnabrück New Year's Eve Run , also known as the OTB New Year's Eve Run, is a running event that has been held annually on New Year's Eve in Osnabrück since 1980 and is one of the popular runs in Lower Saxony with the most participants . The organizer is the Osnabrücker Turnerbund .
history
The New Year's Eve run of the Osnabrück Gymnastics Association was launched in 1980 by Ulrich Rath. The Post SV Osnabrück had previously held New Year's Eve runs. The distance was 10.0 km. In the following year, a short distance of 5.6 km was added to the program. In 1983 Helmut Schweer set a new course record over 10 km with 30:34 minutes, which could not be broken in the next 20 years. In 1988, with Renita da Salva from Brazil, an international top runner won for the first time. In 1994, Jan Fitschen from OTB was the first young up-and-coming runner to win. He later became European champion over the same distance.
In 1996 a chip timing system was introduced . In 2010, the run had to be canceled for the first time in history due to slipperiness. The Bambini run was introduced in 2012 and the Everyman's Run in 2014. Due to the steadily increasing number of participants at times, participation is now only possible after prior registration and payment of the entry fee in advance. In addition, the number of participants in the three main races was limited to a maximum of 3000 runners.
