Simon of Athens

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Simon of Athens is known as the author of an equestrian work in the 5th century BC. It is believed that he was a horse breeder and cavalry officer by profession.

His writings are considered to be the first Greek texts with zoological content. As far as we know today, Simon of Athens dealt mainly with horse breeding . Even if his work Περὶ ἱππικῆς ( Peri hippikes , "On the Art of Riding") has not survived , a fragment was handed down as an excerpt from Xenophon 's script of the same name. Simon's writings were still read in Hellenism .
