Rabbet plane

Double ledge plane

A rabbet plane is a hand plane for making rabbets and shoulders. The cornice planer has a narrow, laterally open planer box. The planing knife protrudes slightly to the side so that you can plane into the inside corner of the fold. The corners of the knife are not rounded during the pulling process in order to obtain a sharp interior angle.

There are different versions of the rabbet planes:

  • Edge planes with a simple knife are used for nudging and roughly trimming the fold.
  • Double sill planers with flap have an adjustable sole at the front so that the knife and flap can be removed downwards. They are used for cleaning and overcasting.
  • Parapet planes or corner cornice planes have no or only a very short nose and reach the end of a stepped or mitered rebate.
