The infraorbital sinus (Latin for "lower eye cavity ") is a paranasal sinus in birds and probably corresponds to the maxillary sinus of mammals . In contrast to the paranasal sinuses of mammals, it is not located between the plates of the skull bones , but directly under the skin. The infraorbital sinus lies towards the beak and below the eye. In the upper wall it has two openings, one to the nasal cavity and one to the posterior turbinate . The major part of the infraorbital sinus is lined by cutaneous mucous membrane , in the rear part by respiratory mucous membrane with ciliated epithelium .

In diseases of the upper respiratory tract, the infraorbital sinus is often involved. This infraorbital sinusitis manifests itself as swelling of the area under the eyes.
