The Sir Gabriel Wood's Mariners 'Home , originally Sir Gabriel Wood's Mariners' Asylum , is a nursing home in the Scottish town of Greenock in Inverclyde . In 1971 the building was included in the Scottish List of Monuments in the highest category A.

history

The son of a merchant Gabriel Wood, born in Gourock in 1767, died in 1845 . In his last will, he ordered the establishment of a care facility for seafarers in the port city of Greenock. The foundation stone was laid by Michael Shaw-Stewart, 7th Baronet, in October 1850. The total cost was £ 8,500. The British Sailor's Society is now responsible for the institution . In addition to assisted living, Sir Gabriel Wood's Mariners' Home has had a special ward for patients with Korsakov's syndrome since 1998 .

Sir Gabriel Wood's Mariners' Home is northwest Greenock on Newark Street . As an architect, D. Mackintosh was entrusted with the planning of the building, which was completed in 1851. The sprawling, two-story building consists of roughly hewn into square shape quarried stone . The building edges are set off with corner stones . The front of the symmetrical building faces north towards the Firth of Clyde . A bell tower is enthroned above the central entrance area.
