Sisters of the Destitute (SD) is an Indian women's order .

history

The community of the Sisters of the Destitute was founded in 1927 in Chunamgangvely in Kerala , Southwest India and is the first order in India to take care of the needy of every caste , worldview and religion .

It comprises 1,500 nuns under the direction of the Superior General Mother Smitha, and is composed of doctors, nurses, lawyers, pathologists, teachers and social workers.

The Sisters of the Destitute operate in Asia, Europe, Africa and the USA. Since 1964 there has been a branch in Düsseldorf , where 15 nurses trained as nurses work under the direction of head nurse Kochurani with great commitment in the Caritas center for the elderly Herz-Jesu in the Flingern district. At the end of May 2011, head nurse Kochurani left the location in Düsseldorf after 25 years of successful work and returned to the main monastery in India. Her successor as superior for all three locations is Sister Divya, a trained nurse who has been able to gain experience in Regensburg so far. Eight other sisters work in Munich on the palliative ward in the hospital of the Barmherzigen Brüder , where they accompany cancer patients with psychological, spiritual and physical help until they die.

A small branch of the SD has existed in Wuppertal since 2012.

Since 2000, three SD sisters have been working in the palliative care ward in the Regensburg hospital of the Barmherzige Brüder, and two other sisters have been working in the rehabilitation ward.
