Site R , also known as the Raven Rock Mountain Complex , is a largely classified underground facility owned by the United States government in Raven Rock , Pennsylvania , about 14 km east of Waynesboro and about 10 km north-northeast of Camp David .

Today's functions are expected to include the DISA system and other key computer systems relevant to the Department of Defense and other US agencies, including disaster response programs such as JSSC's GMC and DISA GCC . Various Army , Navy and Air Force facilities are located on the facility, such as the Emergency Operations Center (AFEOC) .

history

Planning for Site R , also known as Raven Rock , began in 1948. After the detonation of the first Soviet atomic bomb RDS-1 on August 29, 1949, the Joint Command Post pushed ahead with the establishment of an atomic bomb-proof bunker near Washington, where important government agencies continue to operate in the event of a crisis could. In 1950 President Harry S. Truman declared Raven Rock a part of Camp Albert Ritchie , Maryland, which was henceforth referred to as the Alternate Joint Communications Center (AJCC) Site R and which was expanded to full functionality between 1951 and 1953.

Between 1953 and 1971, Site R was expanded under the direction of the US Army Joint Support Command for new telecommunications units such as the Strategic Communications Command (STRATCOM) and the Directorate of Telecommunications . In 1976 the facility was reorganized as the USACC Site R Telecommunications Center under the 7th Signal Command , and in 1978 it was placed under the command of Fort Ritchie Garrison with the Directorate of Telecommunications . From 1977 the program was classified as an area of the US Department of Defense and an "Alternative National Military Command and Control Center" was set up, which was primarily intended to serve the construction of a deep and strongly secured underground facility. The main purpose of the facility was a long survivability in the event of a nuclear war, for which approximately five kilometers of new tunnels and access shafts were created in Raven Rock.

In October 1981 the telecommunications center was renamed from Site R (USACC) to USACC Site R under Headquarters, 7th Sign and again in May 1984 to USAISC-Site R as the 7th signal command message unit. In October 1988 it was renamed the 1111th US Army Signal Battalion under the command of the 1101st US Army Signal Brigade at Fort Lesley J. McNair (Washington, DC) as the Army Support Battalion with responsibility for communications facilities from Site R of the AJCC . In October 1993, this unit with the constant name 1111th US Army Signal Battalion was subordinated to the 1108th US Army Signal Brigade in Fort Ritchie (Maryland), with the scope of duties being limited to the communication functions.

Further relocations and renaming of the unit took place in the last 15 years, which, like similar actions before, probably only served to confuse the military opponents and the own media: In 1995 a Base Realignment and Closure Commission directed units of the US Army Signal Command from Fort Ritchie to Fort Detrick with long-distance communications on the east coast, including the 1108th US Army Signal brigade , the 1111th US Army Signal Battalion and Information Systems Engineering Command-Continental United States (ISEC-CONUS) , with the 1110th US Army Signal Battalion (already previously stationed at Fort Detrick) is said to have been assigned to the 1108th Battalion.

Site R has been under the command of Fort Detrick since October 1, 1997, with Fort Ritchie units reportedly disbanded in September 1998. According to the Boston Globe , Site R is the "secret place" the Vice President of the United States retreats to in times of crisis. On May 25, 2007, the United States Department of Defense declared in the Federal Register that it is illegal to take photographs, draw sketches, maps, etc. of Raven Rock and its facilities without authorization.
