Seat carousel

Seat carousel

A seat carousel is a play device on children's playgrounds that belongs to the rotating play devices . Common properties of these rotary play devices are that they can be rotated around their own vertical axis, that the play device rotates as a whole, and that the play device is driven by the children with muscle power. In addition to the seating carousels , the rotating play equipment also includes the standing carousel , the turntable and the turntable .

Such carousels are mainly found in children's playgrounds, but are increasingly also found in private gardens. If such a rotating play device is on a public playground, it must  meet the DIN  EN 1176 standard.

Compared to fairground carousels

Compared to fairground carousels , a seated carousel is significantly smaller, it is powered by muscle power and is easier to assemble. Seat carousels usually do not have themed vehicles (such as a mini fire engine), but are instead equipped with a simple, wraparound bench. In addition, the children sit at the carousel i. d. Usually radial (look towards the center), while the fair carousel looks in tangential direction (i.e. in the direction of rotation). A fairground carousel is also brightly lit and music is playing. Individual journeys are sold there, so there is a fee, while the playground carousel is subject to the same conditions as the entire playground, i.e. free of charge for public playgrounds.

size

The size of the sitting and standing carousels and the turntables is tailored to a small group of children. So i. d. Usually a diameter between one and three meters, rarely more than that, connected.

In contrast, the turntable is only intended for one or two people. Its diameter is therefore significantly smaller, around 50 cm.

Designs

A distinction is made between seat carousel , standing carousel , turntable and turntable in terms of design . These terms are not always used correctly even by the manufacturers or distributors of these devices. It is therefore advisable to always pay attention to the picture and the exact description, as far as something like this is available.

In the case of a carousel with seats, the floor of the play device is rotatably mounted. A round bench with a backrest is mounted on this floor. The backrest forms the outer edge of the play device.

In the middle is the axis of rotation, which is firmly connected to the ground (i.e. not rotatable). A hand wheel is mounted on it, with the help of which the children can set the play device in rotation.

Standing carousel

Standing carousel

A standing carousel is easier to set up than a seated carousel: There is a rotatable floor on which only bars are mounted to hold on to. It is driven by pushing off with one foot from the ground outside the edge of the carousel.

turntable

The turntable has the simplest structure imaginable: A round disc is rotatably mounted. There are no superstructures. As a rule, the axis of rotation is not exactly vertical, but tilted.

A variation in which the turntable is not flat, but slightly funnel-shaped provides a bit of variety.

Turntable

A turntable is a small turntable for one or two people. There is a bar in the middle to hold on to, which rotates with the play equipment. Here, too, the axis of rotation can be placed at an angle.

Use

Integrative playground carousel

The use of such rotating games familiarizes children with the feel and physical properties of this rotating movement. This includes first sensual experiences with the centrifugal force that acts on the body. The sense of balance is also challenged and thus trained. In addition, children can learn social skills when they notice that the drive is easier for the individual as soon as everyone contributes equally to the drive. This muscular drive naturally also trains muscles and encourages the fun of movement.

In addition, integrative carousels are offered, in which there is also space for wheelchairs. Playing together promotes the natural coexistence of disabled and non-disabled people.

safety

In order to guarantee the safety of the playground equipment in public places, all carousels must meet the "DIN 1176 - Playground Equipment, Part 5 - Additional special safety requirements and test procedures for carousels" .

Of course, there is an increased risk of “improper use” of a carousel. It should be noted that the usual carousels are designed for children. When used by older adolescents and adults, a danger can arise from insufficient space (legroom) or railing heights that are too low. It becomes particularly dangerous when a carousel is driven mechanically (e.g. by a motor scooter). The extremely high speeds achieved as a result always overwhelm the people sitting in the carousel, in one way or another.
