Skein (unit)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Skein ( strand , bundle), was an English measure of length in the textile industry. The abbreviation is "s". The measure is part of the Bradford system , sometimes referred to as the Bradford wool quality system. It is named after the English city of Bradford , the former center of wool and textile processing.

Skein was also used according to the yarn thread with the addition: “skein of flax-yarn” for linen yarn, “skein of wool” for wool, or “long wool skein” for so-called long yarns (see also piece (yarn size) ). Skein was the basis for the wool yarn number and indicated the wool or thread count.

With the introduction of modern spinning processes, the measure was no longer needed. The word skein is still in use for a machine-wound ball of wool .
