As a script ( script , dt. Plur .: scripts , from Lat. Manu scriptum "written by hand"), a publication of universities , colleges designated and other teaching institutions, published accompany a course. It is usually written by the lecturer of the course or individual students and is similar in style to a textbook.

In terms of content, scripts are usually shorter than the usual textbooks on the respective topics that can be purchased in bookshops, as they are intended to accompany a lecture, but not replace it. Furthermore, less formal requirements are placed on scripts than on books; sometimes they are not even bound. All techniques from copying to printing can be used as the manufacturing process, scripts are increasingly being made available on the Internet as PDF files . They are often given out for free or sold at a low price. Scripts cannot be cited in academic papers, partly because they are not collected in academic libraries .

The transcript of a lecture can develop into a script. Many a script has become a textbook after a period of maturity and a few additions . The transitions are fluid. A handout ( thesis paper ) or the slides of a presentation are not yet a script because they are too small, but can be included in a script.
