action

Antonija, the farmer from Silmači, is preparing for the wedding with Aleksis. The tailor Dūdars and his apprentice Rūdis and the seamstress Zāra appear in the courtyard to make the wedding dress. They are also followed by the dealer Ābrams and his son Joske.

In the course of the play it becomes clear that Antonija had a relationship with Dūdars. Eight years ago, Dūdars' leg was mutilated, after which Antonija, at her mother's insistence, left him to marry the former farmer from Silmači. After the farmer's death last year, Antonija met Aleksis, who became engaged to her after a feast, even though he actually loves the maid Elīna. While it is rumored that Aleksis Antonija only wants to get married for material reasons, he torments himself to end the relationship with Elīna.

Since Dūdars cannot stand Antonija's conflict, he tries to convince her that Aleksis does not love her. Meanwhile, Joske hides his relationship with Zāra from his father Ābrams, who is against marrying the penniless seamstress. In the course of the action, Ābrams is injured in an explosion, for which he then blames Joske and Zāra.

Dūdars succeeds in allaying Ābrams' concerns about Zāra. On the morning of St. John's Day, Antonija managed to get Ābrams to recognize the relationship between Joske and Zāra. When Aleksis sees how happy Pičuks and Auce are, he cancels his wedding to Antonija. Dūdars asks to marry the desperate Antonija.

At the end of the piece there are three weddings: between Antonija and Dūdars, Elīna and Aleksis, and Zāra and Joske.
