The Slawenburg Lübben (also called Burglehn ) is the castle stables of a Slavic castle rampart in the Spreewald on the southern edge of today's Lübben . It was the most important medieval castle on the northern Spreewald Pass . Today the Haus Burglehn guest house is located in the area of the former castle .

history

In the 11th to 12th centuries, a round wall was built south of today's Lübben, presumably on remnants of walls from the 9th and 10th centuries . The complex was built by the Slavic tribe of the Lusici . The complex is regarded as a Slavic royal castle.

The rampart wall consisted of logs stacked in a block construction. The wooden grid built in this way was filled with earth. The rampart wall, surrounded by a moat, reached a height of 4 m. The diameter of the wall crown was 150 m. The interior of the castle was only accessible via a shallow embankment, presumably from the north side. Remains of such a dam can still be seen in the meadows across the current driveway.

The complex was then possibly the seat of the Burgraves of Lübben, documented since 1208 , who, however, built Lübben Castle in the 14th century and took their seat there. The hill fort burned down and parts of it sank into the moor.

The top of the wall was later leveled. The area of the castle complex served as a farm. The Haus Burglehn restaurant, which still exists today, was built around the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries .

Excavations took place in the area in the 19th century and in 1966 and 1967.
