The Slingsby T.67 Firefly

Slingsby Aviation Ltd. is a British manufacturer of aircraft , gliders and aircraft and airport accessories.

history

The company was founded by Frederick Nicholas Slingsby in 1930 in Kirkbymoorside (North Yorkshire) as Slingsby Sailplanes Ltd. and was quickly known for its powerful gliders. When private gliding came to a standstill in England at the outbreak of the Second World War, Slingsby looked for other pillars in order to maintain its business. He worked as a supplier for the British aircraft manufacturer Avro and manufactured rudders for the Avro Anson . He also soon received an order from the British Air Force to build some gliders that were needed for radar tests. These orders initially kept the company going economically.

The situation got even better after the RAF's Air Training Corps (ATC) commissioned the manufacture of training gliders. Moreover Slingsby won the contract to manufacture the Hengist - load sailing ship , which for the transport and discontinuation of troops for Operation Overlord was planned. These orders as well as repair work and the production of aircraft spare parts ensured the company's economic survival during the war.

Slingsby today

Today Slingsby Aviation is a supplier for the most diverse areas, but mainly in the field of defense.

For example, oars for submarines or special helmets for the military are manufactured.

Slingsby is also known for building the SAH2200 hovercraft and a two-seat single-engine training aircraft. This machine emerged from the collaboration with the French aircraft manufacturer Fournier . There was a license agreement between Fournier and Slingsby, according to which Slingsby was allowed to build the Fournier RF6B under license on the one hand, but also to develop it further on the other. This is how the Slingsby T67 Firefly was created for various customers, mostly in the military sector.
