SmartCity Malta

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

SmartCity Malta (SCM) is a knowledge cluster that is located on the former site of the Ricasoli industrial area in Kalkara . The implementation of the project began in September 2007 and is to be completed in 2021. The first offices were opened in 2010. The project will cost a total of € 275 million.

Corporate structure

At the beginning of April 2007, an agreement was signed between SmartCity and the Maltese government to jointly develop the SCM project. This type of cooperation offers many advantages and speeds up the planning process. SmartCity Malta is a joint venture between SmartCity Dubai and the government of Malta. The government itself has a 9% stake in it. SmartCity was founded by TECOM Investments as part of Dubai Holding , which wants to build a global network of different business parks. In addition to successfully created parks in Dubai, the planned business and knowledge cluster in Malta is now to attract international companies in addition to the companies already located there. In the long term, Malta would like to become a leader in the field of knowledge clusters, offer diverse job prospects for the local population and increase the domestic GDP. TECOM Investments launched the first industrial cluster in the information and communication technology (ICT) sector, Dubai Internet City, back in 2000. In addition to SmartCity Kochi, SmartCity Malta is to become the first cluster with an international focus.

The concept

The SmartCity concept is based primarily on the sustainable and resource-saving use of the environment, which is also intended to generate cost savings. Various experts were commissioned to keep the cluster's negative environmental impact as low as possible. The US Green Building Council (USGBC) awarded SmartCity the LEED Silver for the first buildings SCM01, SCM02 and SCM03. Some of the planned and in some cases already implemented measures are:

  • The use of LED lights that are operated with the help of photovoltaics
  • Heat recovery through built-in wheels
  • A storm water management system that optimizes the use of rainwater
  • Double glazing in the buildings

Choice of location in Malta

The decisive criterion for the location of Malta is the geographical location in the center of the Mediterranean Sea in combination with the state language English. Malta thus offers the economic advantage of uniting the markets of Europe, North Africa and the Middle East. In addition, Malta's infrastructure is already equipped with a modern port and efficient logistics centers. The political orientation of Malta has ensured a stable economy for years and creates a wide variety of tax breaks and incentives for companies. A so-called 6/7 regulation ensures a subsequent tax refund in the form of dividends or bonuses when companies settle in Malta.

Commercial space distribution

In addition to companies such as Huawei, IBM, STK Europe and TMF Group, SmartCity Malta is also to accommodate recreational areas, hotels, shopping and gastronomy and thus create 11,000 jobs in the future. Of the total of 360,000 m², the business areas represent a share of 160,000 m², the area with a recreational and leisure function will cover an area of 118,000 m² and 60,000 m² are intended for residential areas. The Laguna Walk has been the new attraction since July 2014; an area that offers space for entertainment, leisure and gastronomy. Various architectural highlights, such as an open-air amphitheater or the large-scale fountain with a view of the lagoon, invite you to relax and stroll.
