Snap Spectacles are sunglasses from the American company Snap . They are the first hardware extension of the social media app Snapchat .

product

Snap (formerly Snapchat) introduced sunglasses with a built-in camera in September 2016. Snap takes up the original concept of the Aura project by Google , whose Google Glass has been discontinued. However, Snap Spectacles are much cheaper. Since the fall of 2016, Spectacles glasses have been available at least in the USA for $ 129. For the start of sales, Snap opted for a new type of distribution: The glasses were sold exclusively via vending machines in different locations. Snap Spectacles have also been sold in Europe since June 2017. They are available online and from vending machines in some major European cities.

use

To record a video, all you have to do is press a button on the glasses. Then the recording starts for 10 seconds. The perspective of the Snap Spectacles should correspond to human vision. A light on the glasses signals the recording. The video is then sent to the smartphone via a WiFi connection or Bluetooth and published there via the Snapchat app. In order to synchronize glasses with a Snapchat app, the user has to film a personal barcode (called Snapcode) within the app with the glasses.

Such short videos are very popular with the users of the Snapchat app. The company is currently assuming that a user without Snap Spectacles needs up to 45 seconds to overcome all technical hurdles and to capture a special moment as a video sequence using the Snapchat app. The new sunglasses are intended to simplify and accelerate the process and thus strengthen video usage within the app. In order to counteract an undetected recording, the outer LED ring around the camera is activated when a recording is activated and an active recording is displayed.

criticism

While Google Glass glasses were very easy to see for outsiders and people could avoid such a recording, it has been criticized that Snap's product is a camouflaged camera. Therefore the criticism is: While you can avoid a recording with a smartphone or Google Glass by simply recognizing the hardware, the Spectacles offer the possibility of filming largely undetected. In addition, the recordings can be put online almost at the same time.
