Société de Motorisations Aéronautiques

The Société de Motorisations Aéronautiques ( SMA for short ) is a French company that manufactures aircraft engines, especially diesel engines . It has been part of the SAFRAN group since May 2005 . The company has been located in Bourges and Villaroche since November 2005 .

The company was founded in 1997 by Socata (part of EADS ) and Renault as Morane Renault . Both companies each had a 50% stake in the new company. The development of three different diesel aircraft engines began, all of which were given the prefix MR . In June 2000, SNECMA also took a 33% stake. The prefix of the engines changed to SR , for SNECMA-Renault. It was decided to first develop the SMA SR305 for series production. This goal was achieved in 2002 when the engine was approved by the FAA .

The hoped-for sales did not materialize, however. The Société de Motorisations Aéronautiques therefore had to apply for bankruptcy protection in February 2005. In April, SNECMA took over 100% of the shares and the company was incorporated into the SAFRAN group.
