history

On December 5, 1962, at an extraordinary general meeting of the Société nationale des chemins de fer français en Algérie, the change of the company name to Société nationale des chemins de fer algériens was decided. On May 16, 1963, the change was made official by Decree 63-183, signed by President Ahmed Ben Bella . The Algerian state became majority shareholder with 25,500 shares.

With Decree 76-28 on March 25, 1976, the company was split into three companies: The Société Nationale des Transports Ferroviaires algériens (SNTF) for transport, the Société nationale chargée du renouvellement et de l'extension du réseau (SNERIF, route renewal and expansion) and the Société d'engineering et de réalization d'infrastructures ferroviaires (SIF, for the maintenance and modernization of the infrastructure). SNERIF and SIF were later dissolved and merged into the SNTF.
