Social Democratic Party (United States)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Social Democratic Party ( SDP ) was founded in June 1898 due to disputes following the "First National Assembly of Social Democracy in America" ( SDA ). The "Social Democracy in America" had recruited its members from the environment of the Pullman strike and was considered a social, less a political movement.

The Social Democratic Party turned to the presidential election of 1900 with Eugene V. Debs its own candidate, reaching 90,000 votes, almost twice as many votes as the established Socialist Labor Party of America .

In 1901 the SDP was combined with various independent socialist parties to form the Socialist Party of America .
