Break it off

Social Life is the second studio album by the American indie rock band Koufax .

It was released on October 22, 2002 by Heroes & Villains and Vagrant Records . The title Bright Side was used in an episode of the American-Canadian animated sitcom Clone Highs .

background

In contrast to its predecessor, the second album was recorded as a quartet. Instead of recording with two keyboard players as in the previous It Had to Do with Love , this time it was decided to add additional guitar parts.

After the last recordings, two members left the band. Ben Force was accepted as a new band member and not only replaced the bassist who had left the band before. Since he also played the guitar, he was also able to work as a supplement for the keyboard player who had left. The new album was correspondingly more guitar-heavy.

Cover design

The cover shows the band as a four-man line-up in the recording studio and, as a special feature, this time contains a blurb, as one is usually used to from books. In addition to the lyrics, the booklet also sketches the tabs of the guitar accord chords.

Reviews

The album received mostly positive reviews:

"It's funny how much of a difference a small piano can make on a rock record ... with the piano, Koufax are iconoclasts that are reminiscent of the least hipster-friendly music of the past 25 years, while still managing to sound contemporary."

- Popmatters

“[There is] more space for the guitar again, but mainly for the bass and drums, which swing and pumping, make almost every one of the eleven songs a dance floor sweeper ... Social Life is peppered with loads of easy- going pop pearls that come with elaborate, never overloaded arrangements and wonderful melodies inspire. Not only fans of 80s pop and rock by the Elvis Costello or Joe Jackson brands should grab it here ... "
