Hard Times Are in Fashion is the third studio album by the American indie rock band Koufax . It was released on August 9, 2005 by Doghouse and Motor Music .
background
When Koufax began recording the third album, this happened without an effective record contract. This meant that the band had to finance the recording costs out of pocket. Work was carried out in six different studios. In addition, the band was just affected by a line-up change. The brothers Rob and Ryan Pope joined the band The Get Up Kids , which was just about to break up , and formed the drums and bass ensemble. No other Koufax album features as many guest musicians as this one. The album was recorded with a total of three different drummers. The guitar and piano work was also done from outside. For the first time, a pedal steel guitar can be heard on a Koufax album. Ultimately, the finished album was handed over to Doghouse (distribution in the USA) and Motormusic (distribution in Europe).
Cover design
This time the design and layout were done by Micah Smith. The cover shows a grainy black and white shot of a girl's face with a red-eye effect, which is normally only possible with a color shot. At the top left above the band name the album title "Harte Zeiten are in fashion".

Reviews
The album received mostly positive reviews:
“Who said the music world was fair? If there were such a thing as justice, the five-man, represented by front man Robert Suchan, would have long since sat on the pop throne ... If Koufax himself were to be denied the breakthrough beyond the status of an insider tip with this wonderful album, despite all the happiness but always melancholy Just justify that with the fact that the five is simply too sophisticated ... “- ox-fanzine.de
“… With the opener Why Bother at All , a snappy sweeper flies around your ears, the piano hacks itself into a joyous intoxication, Suchan's voice comes out so energetically and electrified, as if it were charged with a cat's tail, the leg begins to rhythmically close pull out. However, they don't save the drive of the beginning over the entire distance of the album. Between good-humored, loosely grooving numbers that are great to romp about on the dance floor, your foot keeps slipping off the accelerator. And it shows that their strengths lie far more in the flight to the front, in a good-humored, rousing piano-pop-rock and less in quieter areas. But these moments are generous to drive over… ”- plattentests.de
“... Robert Suchan's always somewhat provocative, latently nervous voice and Rosenberg's piano play together with a long learned ease, without appearing overly routine, in general, the piano is the determining instrument on Hard Times Are in Fashion alongside the singing . Koufax didn't always sound so consistently in a good mood ... “- intro.de
"… Wonderful, grown-up pop songs - we're thinking of Joe Jackson, Elvis Costello, stylish 80s quotes and a great summer." - finestvinyl.de
