It Had to Do with Love is the first studio album by the American indie rock band Koufax .

It was released on September 5, 2000 on Heroes & Villains Records and Vagrant Records .

background

While the previous, self-titled debut EP was still released by Doghouse, the debut album was distributed via Vagrant Records , or the subsidiary Heroes & Villains. The contract with Vagrant came about with the help of the befriended band The Get Up Kids .

After the album was recorded, Sean Grogan and Andrew Cameron left the band. The main reason given was that the band tried to tour as extensively as possible, which the two band members were not used to.

Cover design

The cover photo was taken by Larry Rosenberg in the photo studio and shows the band and their equipment in front of a blue screen. Above the heads of the band members are given names and the instruments they played.

On the other hand, the preparations for the cover photo, including the title, can be seen on the back cover. Design and artwork was done by Frank Davidson.

Reviews

The album received positive to mixed reviews:

It Had to Do with Love helped kickstart the current trend for indie bands to sound like Joe Jackson . It may not have been the best-selling album in Vagrant history, but it was one of the best-written, most thoughtful, and properly played pop albums ever released by the Vagrant label. ”- Allmusic

“Koufax draw a lot from the synth rock and pop prog of the 70s like ELO, Supertramp and maybe some early Genesis albums to set up their keyboard excursions… It Had To Do With Love , may be silly or even boring for It sounds like hardcore emo or indie fans, but listeners who appreciate bolder, more eclectic recordings will enjoy this pop experiment ”- Ink19
