history

Tram in Palma de Mallorca, 1914

1891 streetcar company SMT was established and started operations with initial twelve acquired in Liverpool and mules racial Mallorquina drawn trams within the city. Every passenger car that drove on rails was pulled by two to three mules. In popular parlance , the laterally open car was called " jardineras " ("flower boxes"). The track system of the railway was built with a gauge of three English feet - which corresponds to 914 mm. The first line, around 4.8 kilometers long, ran from Plaça d'en Coll (center) to the south-west port area of Porto Pi .

In 1914 and with the establishment of the Sociedad general de tranvías eléctricos interurbanos de Palma de Mallorca SA , the public transport service with mules was discontinued and modernized with 42 electric trams, which remained in operation until the end of 1958.

In 1959 the tram service was completely abandoned and, with the support of the city council and other public institutions, replaced by 53 buses, which were characterized by greater capacity and flexibility. In 1971 the Sociedad General de tranvías went bankrupt and the employees founded a workers' association. The Sociedad Anónima Laboral Mallorquina de Autobuses (SALMA) took over the public transport in the city and also the operation between the other places on Mallorca.

In 1985, the city council of Palma took over the public transport of the workers' association SALMA and it became the current transport company Empresa Municipal de Transports Urbans de Palma de Mallorca, SA. (EMT) founded.

Since its inception, the EMT has been dedicated to public transport in the city of Palma de Mallorca and between cities, with the origin or end station Estació Intermodal de Palma in the center of the city of Palma. The municipal utilities now operate a dense city bus network and the Metro de Palma, which opened in 2007 .
