The geographical society was founded in the context of the European research and colonization movement and was particularly important in the exploration of the African continent.

history

On November 10, 1875, a group of 74 signatories sent a petition to King Louis I of Portugal to establish a society called Sociedade de Geografia de Lisboa , whose job it would be to promote the research and advancement of geography and related sciences in the country to promote and support. Two of the signatories were Luciano Cordeiro and Teófilo Braga, as well as many other intellectuals, journalists and politicians of the time.

Social goals were the organization of conferences and scientific congresses as well as the provision of larger funds for research trips and scientific research.

In December 1876 the Society initiated the publication of the Boletim da Sociedade de Geografia de Lisboa ( Bulletin of the Geographical Society of Lisbon ), which is still published today.

There is a museum at the company's headquarters in Lisbon.
