Society for the Promotion of Byzantine Studies

The Society for the Promotion of Byzantine Studies ( SPBS ) is a Founded in 1983, the British learned society in the field of Byzantine Studies .

The aim of the society is to research the history and culture as well as the language and literature of the Byzantine Empire and its neighbors.

Since its founding, the board of the SPBS has also served as the National Committee of Great Britain within the Association Internationale des Études Byzantines (AIEB), founded in 1948 . The SPBS overlaps in its objectives with the older Society for the Promotion of Hellenic Studies , from which it emerged, but offers a greater specialization compared to this society, which is heavily focused on ancient Greece .
