The Society of Economic Geologists (SEG) was founded on December 28, 1920. The organization is an association of geoscientists who have set themselves the goal of promoting interest in geology and the related areas of geology, mining and exploration. The SEG is very international and has over 4000 members in 80 countries. The Society is also the editor of the journal Economic Geology .

The SEG awards several prizes, including the Penrose gold medal .

SEG Student Chapter

The Society of Economic Geologists maintains many so-called chapters (local groups) worldwide. In these groups, students who are interested in deposit geology meet and exchange ideas about their common interests. Lectures and field trips are also organized. There are two SEG chapters in Germany, one is at the TU Bergakademie Freiberg , the other at the TU Munich, and others are in the Czech Republic, France and the USA.
