Festoon (theater)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A soffit ( fr. Soffite , it. Soffitta "the underlying Fortified") is in the stage technology a top in barely visible area of the stage suspended ceiling backdrop.

The festoon or soffit consists of one or more panels of fabric suspended parallel to the ramp, which are mostly made of black velvet or molton , but can also be colored, painted or ornamented. Together with vertically hanging side backdrops, the so-called “scarves” or “thighs”, it takes on the shape of a frame. Several frames arranged one behind the other form “alleys” in between.

The festoon prevents access to the upper machinery ( Schnürboden ). By the way it is suspended or moved, it allows the optical deepening of the perspective and various other stage effects to be achieved.
