Reason: A clear definition should be written here, as well as the term must be differentiated from IP multimedia subsystem - Kgfleischmann 17:57, Oct. 15, 2011 (CEST)

A soft switch is a network component for next generation networks that offer IP telephony as a service , for example .

The definition of the term is not yet fully completed in this area, so that the softswitch components are assigned different functions depending on the literature and origin ( telecommunications or IT ).

Definition I.

A soft switch takes over the control of the media gateways and the necessary signaling in a next generation network . It is the central functional component for control, the "intelligence" of the network.

Definition II

The function listed under “Definition I” plus the media gateway function.

General

The name Softswitch can be traced back to the software and to its central control of the switching tasks, which a "switch" performs in conventional telephony. The software is usually installed on fault-tolerant servers for resilience reasons and also handles connection control. Despite the name, a soft switch is not a pure software solution. Considerable hardware expenditure is required to implement a carrier grade soft switch.

The switching tasks of a soft switch include functions of protocol conversion and authorization, and management functions of administration and billing. These functions are required for the routing of voice connections between the different network types as well as for resource and bandwidth management , which is supposed to guarantee a sufficient quality of service .
