Sohel Rana

Mohammad Sohel Rana (* 1978 ) is a Bangladeshi politician and is said to have been a leading member of the local branch of the Jubo League , the youth department of the ruling Awami League party.

Factory collapse in 2013

Rana owned the Rana Plaza factory building . The collapse of this building, in which more than 1,100 people were killed and around 2,500 injured, is considered to be the worst industrial accident in the history of Bangladesh. Sohel Rana was arrested a few days after the collapse. In August 2017, he received a first 3-year prison sentence for refusing to reveal his financial circumstances. The allegation of (mass) murder in connection with the factory collapse in Sabhar is still pending . He faces the death penalty for this .
