Solo garlic or single- toe garlic is the trade name for garlic , which is made from a single bulb with no individual cloves . Common trade names are also mono garlic , bulbous garlic , Japanese garlic or Chinese garlic - the latter can lead to confusion with garlic and chives ( Allium tuberosum ). Due to the size of the onion, the solo garlic is also occasionally confused with elephant garlic , a variety of the species Allium ampeloprasum (field garlic / summer garlic). However, the size of the one-toe garlic is between approx. 25 to 50 mm , while the elephant garlic reaches sizes of 60 mm and more and a full-grown onion develops from several toes.
origin
The Chinese province of Yúnnán is often associated with one-toe garlic, but the plant is also grown in other regions of the world, as it has found international distribution, especially for the preparation of food.
use
Special differences from the multi-toed garlic, which is more common in Europe, are:
- easier peeling and cutting
- milder in taste
- less pronounced body odor after consumption
