Solovetski ( Russian Соловецкий ) is one of the Russian Solovetsky Islands in the White Sea . It is located southwest of the smaller island of Anserski . Solowezki was used in the times of Catherine the Great and later by the Bolsheviks as a prison island - among other things for the imprisonment of Cossacks - and is considered part of the Gulag archipelago . Solovetski is now used as a place of residence for monks.
